In the 1986 reprint of Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails, however, the brandy is omitted and the formula given as “1/3 Lemon Juice, 1/3 White Crème de Menthe, 1/3 Cointreau”. The Old Pal is credited to Harry MacElhone in his 1922 book, ABC of Mixing Cocktails , which is made with equal parts Canadian Rye Whiskey, French Vermouth and Campari (1:1:1). This was also backed up in Robert Vermeire's 1922 Cocktails and How to Mix Them. Harry McElhone (Harry's New York Bar, Paris - opposite Ciro's). BTW: McElhone often can be found misspelled as Mc Elhone, MacElhone or Mac Elhone. The first recipe for a Sidecar cocktail appeared in 1922 in Harry MacElhone's Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails. Embury described the Side Car as, "This cocktail is the most perfect example of a magnificent drink gone wrong. Strain into a pre-chilled cocktail glass. In his 1922 book Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails, Harry MacElhone credits the drink to Pat MacGarry, one of the great bartenders of the day.
